Canada to increase immigration target to 350,000 by 2021:
Most of these newcomers are coming under economic programs designed to address skills shortages and gaps in the labour market.
Canada to welcome more than 1.3 million newcomers through the country’s various economic, family and refugee and humanitarian immigration categories between 2018 and 2021. Most new admissions under Canada’s immigration levels plan — 72 per cent — will be allocated to economic programs in 2021.
The Government of Canada has set out a multi-year immigration levels plan that commits to welcoming more permanent residents to Canada over the next three years. In 2018, Canada expects to welcome between 290,000 and 330,000 permanent residents, which is the highest level in recent history. Moreover, this plan includes raising immigration levels to between 300,000 and 350,000 in 2019 and between 310,000 and 360,000 in 2020.
Most spaces for immigration will continue to be devoted to successful Economic Class applicants and an increasing number of spaces will be devoted to provincial nominees
The plan also includes projected increases in admissions under the Family Class program, as part of the Government’s commitment to family reunification and in recognition of ongoing interest from Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor eligible family members.

51% jump in Indians acquiring permanent residency in Canada

The number of Indian citizens obtained permanent residency in Canada through its express entry route in 2018 has increased by 51 per cent from 2017.

• As per the data, 41,675 invites, or 46 per cent of the total, were sent to those holding Indian citizenship in 2018

During 2018, more than 39,500 Indian citizens obtained permanent residency in Canada under the express entry system. According to the statistics released recently, Canada admitted over 92,000 new permanent entry residents under its express entry system in 2018, a rise of 41 per cent over the previous year.
In 2017, Canada had admitted nearly 65,500 permanent residents through its express entry route, of which 40 per cent, or 26,300 odd, were from India. However, the number of Indian citizens obtained permanent residency in 2018 has increased by 51 per cent from 2017.
An interesting thing to note here is that in 2017, China had secured the second rank. It slipped to the third rank in 2018, with only about 5,800 Chinese acquiring permanent residency. Meanwhile, Nigeria obtained the second slot in this list. The number of invites issued to the citizens of China indicated a negative growth. The challenges faced by Indians working in the US, such as delays or denials of H-1B visa extensions, green-card backlogs, or the proposed plan to revoke the right of H-1B spouses to work.
